Statement for the Cancellation of Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon 2015
After much consideration and feedback from Sabah Parks, community leaders and the local residents of Kundasang and Ranau, the 2015 Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon Organizing Committee has decided to CANCEL the mountain race scheduled for the 17th and 18th of October, following the recent earthquake that struck Sabah on 5th June.
Continuous assessment shows considerable damage to climbing trails and trekking paths, which may compromise the safety of climbers. Subsequent earthquakes and tremors have also been detected, undermining the stability of the surrounding areas, hill slopes, roads and trails. With the monsoon season expected in the final quarter of the year, conditions for the race will be further compromised.
The Organisers will make arrangements to fully refund payments of all registered participants. We thank you for your understanding and support.
We are deeply saddened on the loss of life during the earthquake and extend our deepest condolences. With the support and assistance from the public, it is our hope that the affected communities will recover from this unfortunate incident.
